  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp whole black pepper (coarsely crushed)
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • A handful of curry leaves
  • 8-10 cashews, broken
  • 1 green chili, slit (optional, for spice)

Instructions:

Step 1: Cook the Kodo Millet and Moong Dal

  1. Rinse kodo millet and moong dal thoroughly under running water.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the millet, dal, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Cook for 3-4 whistles, or until the millet and dal are soft and mushy. Let the pressure release naturally.
  3. Open the lid and mash the mixture slightly to achieve a creamy consistency. Adjust water if needed to loosen it.

Step 2: Prepare the Seasoning

  1. Heat ghee in a small pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add crushed black pepper, asafoetida, ginger, green chili, curry leaves, and cashews. Sauté until the cashews turn golden brown.

Step 3: Combine and Serve

  1. Pour the prepared seasoning over the cooked millet-dal mixture. Mix well to combine the flavors.
  2. Serve hot, garnished with a drizzle of ghee and a side of coconut chutney or sambar.
